The aim of this web page is to build up a Catalogue raisonné ( a complete listing) of all the lithographs of the French artist, Claude Hemeret. At the moment I, and other art dealers, are unsure of how many lithographs Claude has produced. I’ve written to Claude, and he doesn’t seem to have produced a list, nor does his editor. I’m an avid collector of Claude’s lithographs, and I think Claude has produced over a 100 lithographs, and currently I have about 29.

So the aim of this page is for people to read it, and send me e-mail telling me that there’s yet another lithograph I’ve missed, and “here is a picture of it”.

Please note

I do not sell lithographs of Claude Hemeret - there are plenty of art dealers who do

For each lithograph, I’ve provided the French title, and my translation in English. Frequently this is different to what other people have named the lithograph, and hopefully we can remove this confusion by using an “official name”.

I have generally used the images of other people (downloaded from E/Bay or the Internet) to illustrate this page. Usually I’ve acknowledged them – if I’ve missed anyone, please accept my apology.

I’ve divided up the “known” lithographs into 4 sections – Early Work, The 1985 Series, Pianos and Flowers, and Later Works. This is purely arbitrary on my part – as my knowledge is incomplete, this is the best I can do at the moment. Ideally we would be able to produce an exhaustive and complete list of

Publisher/Printer       Date produced       Lithograph       Number Printed

This is what we should aim for. Any comments, additional lithographs (hopefully with photographs) and helpful leads should be E-mailed to me at peter.elliott@loganskin.com.au

Numbering and Measuring of Lithographs

There is a limited number of lithographs that can be produced from each stone or zinc plate (which is mainly used nowadays). Normally the graph is described as 23/170, meaning that 170 were produced. In fact, anything from an extra 5 to 17 are also produced, and given to the artist. These are signed, but numbered E.A. The EA stands for "Epreuve d'Artiste" or Artist Proof in English and is just as viable as a numbered print as long as you get a certificate showing the amount of AP's produced, which should be no more than 10% of the numbered edition (courtesy of Jack Arnold). EA prints, which are uncommon, are highly regarded, and a lot of our lithographs are EA.

Most of the older type lithographs have a white border surrounding them, and the measurement given is of the actual print. Newer style lithographs are “sans margins” (without margins), where the lithograph takes up the whole surface. I will try and indicate this in my measurements, as it may help identify a lithograph.

The Early Work

As most Bilographie's state, Claude started illustrating children's books, and about the late 60's started to branch out into painting. I have two of his early works - I wonder how many of these horses he did.

Dessin Tauromachie
(Drawing of Bullfight)

Jeux D'ete
(Summer Games)

1969 - This is described as a wash drawing (dessin livres). Dimensions 45 by 55 cms. Picture courtesy of stab_fr.E-Bay.fr

1975. This is a small Black and white lithograph of two horses playing in the summer sun. Small, Dimensions : 54 cm X 38 cm, numbered 26/80. Picture courtesy of fabrice5533- E-Bay.fr.

Chevaux Rassembles
(Gathering of Horses)

Another small lithograph by Claude, this one EA (so no information on the numbers produced, but probably 80). Probably produced about 1975. Lithograph is 54 cms by 36 cms, with the picture being 34 cms by 25 cms.

The 1985 Series

I’ve called this the 1985 series because one of our sources (Jack Arnold, of New York) suggested this as the date of production. Claude had moved into colour, in a big way, and these are large lithographs, ablaze with colour, all of a similar style.

Jardin d'Antibes (Garden in Antibes)

A large colourful lithograph. We purchased two copies at Auction – in a mixed lot of prints and posters – and it too us a day or two to realize that these were lithographs, and then to find out this was Claude’s work. We became hooked, and have been collecting these ever since. Picture courtesy of Jack Arnold (Jack Arnold Fine Arts, New York – www.jarnoldfinearts.com) who is a very knowledgeable authority on Lithography. Dimensions 74 by 91 cms, plus margins. Our Copies 57/170 and 62/170.

Lavandes (Lavender)
This is a lithograph that we don’t have, having been outbid on E-bay. Seems to be a large lithograph, probably the same size as Jardin d’Antibes, but no exact details known.

/

Cypresses (Same name in English)

A large colourful lithograph. I found this on studiocivale.com, a New York dealer, and for a while had it confused with Paysage Toscan (they do look alike). He has called it Cypresses, but perhaps it should be called by the French name Cypres. Dimensions 51 by 61 cms, no information about margins. From a series of 175.
